The Welsh Assembly Government began consultation on a strategy to promote sport and active recreation. It said that only 28 per cent of the adult population of Wales regularly took part in sport or active recreation, making Wales one of the least physically active parts of Europe. As a result tens of thousands of people needlessly suffered ill health and early death, costing 100 million each year in additional health and social care.
